Premiere: Burnt Ones - "Fountain of Youth"

A Burnt Ones song doesn't just play: it quakes, howls, and shakes its hips under the faint light of a blood-red moon. This Bay Area trio's playful penchant for excess comes in the form of thunderous booms of amplified guitar fuzz, which sound at once dizzying, assaultive, and deeply satisfying. This isn't let's sit down and contemplate life by the fire music; this is foot-stomping, thigh-slapping, celebratory, let's jump into the fire just to feel how it hot it burns music. Fresh off releasing a 7" on Oakland's Fuzz City Records and a pair of tracks for two compilations on John Dwyer's Castle Face imprint, Burnt Ones are now set to deliver their second long player, You'll Never Walk Alone. Burger Records, who co-released the band's sublime glam-smacked single "Meet The Golden One" with the band's own Gold Records, will put out You'll Never Walk Alone on April 30th. Burnt Ones sound like the bastard offspring of T. Rex. Whereas neighboring Bay area groups like the now defunct Bare Wires picked up on various threads of the glam scene—from Gary Glitter to Sweet and The New York Dolls—and mixed it up with a touch of punk, Burnt Ones straight up worship at the glittery altar of Marc Bolan with sincere and intoxicating hip-shaking force. What makes the Burnt Ones so enjoyable to listen to is that they aren't just anonymously borrowing from an idol, they openly celebrate their influences, as on the playful foot-stomper "Gonna Listen To T. Rex (All Night Long)." The band's dark blasts of fuzzed-out guitars, giant punches of drumming, and anthemic howls have already been pressed onto a handful of singles (most of which are long sold-out) and one long-player. The latest 7" though—released on Warm Soda's imprint, Fuzz City Records—may contain the band's most brilliantly realized nugget yet: "Protection Circle." Throwing fistfuls of dark magic, high voltage electricity, and gold-speckled glitter into a black cauldron, Burnt Ones summon up a piece of truly quaking boogie-rock ecstasy.

Warm Soda - "Reaction"

One of our very favorites bands of the last five years, Oakland's Bare Wires, broke up this year after a tumultuous SXSW and a subsequently cancelled US tour, as reported by SF Weekly. Though Bare Wires still have one more album en route for release later this summer dubbed Idle Dreams—a follow up to last year's sublime 10", Cheap Perfume—frontman and all-around glam-fueled power-pop mastermind Matthew Melton has already focused his talents and energy towards two exciting new projects: his own East Oakland-based studio and label, Fuzz City, and a new band, Warm Soda—both of which are well under way. Fuzz City—which Melton runs along with his new bandmates Rob Good and Sam Lefebvre—has three 7"s under its belt by Bay area talents Adam Widener, Burnt Ones, and Dirty Cupcakes. Warm Soda isn't far behind either with its own forthcoming single due out shortly via Southpaw. The first gulp of Warm Soda's rock 'n' roll formula is the syrupy, garage-cooked pop of "Reaction." Bare Wires may be over, but "Reaction" retains much of the band's signature moves: muted guitars, snappy solos, glam-smacked drumming, and Melton's sweet gravely hush of a vocal delivery. Bare Wires or not, if Melton continues to produce music this consistently compelling, this fan's appetite will be more than sated.
