Nallo - "Different"

Minneapolitan ramshackle psych and fuzz outfit Nallo released their debut album this week dubbed Mechano and The Trees, the cover of art of which depicts a robot taking in his final moments amongst the trees after discovering he doesn't fit in with the rest of the world. Nallo's long-player continues the fiery attitude of devastating punch-in-the gut first single "Submarines" with blistering solos that dance along dark banks of dissonance, foot-racing rhythms, and frontman Andrew Ranallo's achey belly-full-of-soul voice. Lead-off track "Different" combines much of what makes this young band so promising: strong-armed fastballs of guitar feedback, storming crashes of cymbal, echoey primal shrieks that recall Thee Oh Sees, and Ranallo's rapid-fire vocal delivery that centers around themes of death and, like Mechano, being just a touch "different."

Nallo: Minneapolitan Ramshackle Fuzz

Minneapolis trio Nallo play with a wonderfully warm and ramshackle sound. I first stumbled onto the group via the two-minute garage-born barn-burner "Submarines" over on Rollo Grady. That track doesn't so much play as it does blast off rocket-ship like with ferociously beaten drums, swinging guitars, and loosely harmonized vocals. The band's most recent offering, "Wine," is a slower-paced gem that showcases a more intimate side of the group. Over a rattle of tambourine, a strummed acoustic, and a touch of organ, the band's throaty chorus of voices come across like a late-night offering of faded memories passed around a campfire. There's a simplistic charm to these songs that makes them both refreshing and quickly re-playable. Keep an eye out for the group's forthcoming full-length.
