Best of 2012: Vinyl Singles & EPs

Denney & The Jets :: Denney & The Jets EP
On "Fun Girls," Nashville's Denney & The Jets dish out rock 'n' roll as it was originally intended to be played: fast and loose, sweaty and fun, and fit for the dancefloor. With this new EP, the band's unleashed their finest sounding recording to date. When not cranking out Chuck Berry-worthy scorchers like "Close The Blinds," the band slows into drunken bar sing-along territory, as on "Paranoid," where Denney comically laments: "Honey we used to fuck. Now all you want to do is make love, but I don't like it that way."

Teen Mom :: Mean Tom EP

Our own little record label Analog Edition is set to drop its 5th release on November 27th via DC trio Teen Mom. Comprised of Sean Dalby, Tom MacWright, and Chris Kelly, Teen Mom revels in the contrasts that make great pop music: sombre lyrics juxtaposed with bright jangly guitars; hushed honey-sweet melodies with dark heavy slabs of distortion; and manic racing drums served with funkified pops of bass.

The group's six-track debut EP is pressed and hand-numbered in an edition of 300 on 12" vinyl—250 in black and 50 in coke bottle clear—with artwork by DC artist Saman Bemel Benrud. Below, check out the racing guitar-driven first single, "I Wanna Go Out," and the music video we put together for it.

Pre-order the 12" vinyl from Analog Edition.

Analog Edition Sampler

Everybody Taste is going on break for a week. While we're out, check in with our imprint Analog Edition's free label sampler, which features a gorgeous ocean-slapping instrumental from Blake Mills; an alternate take of Stone Darling's "Baby Come Home" that has J. Tillman (Father John Misty) on drums and Joel Morales (Babies On Acid) on bass; a giant swelling beauty of experimental pop from Lands & Peoples; the hushed previously vinyl-only Breakfast In Fur track "Ghost Story"; and a tease at our next release with DC fuzz-pop extraordinaires, Teen Mom.

Teen Mom :: Mean Tom

DC-based trio Teen Mom released their debut EP last week, Mean Tom, and despite the silly word play and that band name, it contains a handful of really wonderfully crafted and charming pop jams. While the EP''s single, "You and Me," wrestles in off-kilter swaying rhythms, clean-toned slices of guitar, and sweet hushed vocal melodies, the band also slops on the fuzz as in the very 90s second half of "Always Happy" and the jumpy chorus of album stand-out "I Wanna Go Out." The band can really turn on a dime, churning out walls of gain-heavy guitars one moment and jangly foot-tapping funk-laced pop the next. It's an incredibly promising six-track introduction, and one I can't recommend enough.

Listen to and download the EP from Bandcamp.
