Hilang Child :: First Writings EP

Winter is here, and the debut EP from young Londoner Ed Riman is the perfect remedy. Like the quietly roaring fire displayed on the cover of of the record, aptly dubbed First Writings, Riman's songs are warm crackling comforts: sparse piano-driven ballads built around simple chord progressions and airy reverb-lifted melodies. On the EP's standout track, "Chaturanga"—the name for the ancient Indian ancestor of chess—Riman slowly unleashes ascending builds of harmony, billowing and growing into shifting and increasingly sublime heights. It's an astonishingly accomplished collection of songs for a first release, and one that I'll be continually escaping to amidst the early darkness and biting cold of these winter months.
