Shoes - "Do I Get So Shy"

Zion, Illinois band Shoes are predominantly known as a power-pop group thanks to their cult hit Black Vinyl Shoes, which they self-released back in 1977 in a batch of 1,000 copies. Bit it's their early raw, largely acoustic, folk and psychedelic centered 1975 LP One In Versailles that we've had on constant repeat this week. Written and recorded by brothers John and Jeff Murphy for their bandmate Gary Klebe while he was abroad studying in Versailles, France, the album is a wonderfully warm and low-key home-recorded collection of demos filled with gorgeous harmony, playful arrangements, loose ramshackle percussion, and the occasional cackle of laughter. Originally pressed on just 300 copies of 12" vinyl by Shoes, the rarity and collector's item is now being pressed again by preeminent reissue label Numero Group. Along with One In Versailles—which is due out in the Fall—Numero is also repressing Black Vinyl Shoes, Bazooka, and Present Tense.
